Description

This handmade Damascus cowboy knife combines an 8 inch overall length and a 4 inch hand-forged Damascus drop point blade with a solid brass bolster, pink turquoise composite scales veined with black matrix, and a black leather pancake sheath finished with basketweave-tooled pink inlay panels.

What Makes This a Cowboy Knife Rather Than a Hunter?

The proportions tell you. A cowboy knife runs a shorter, finer-tipped blade than a dedicated hunter, sized for the tasks that fill a working day on horseback rather than one job done twice a season. Cutting baler twine, trimming latigo, opening feed sacks, working leather, and light meat work all suit a blade that turns quickly in the hand. At 8 inches overall on a 4 inch drop point, the Prairie Rose sits in the same working envelope as the rest of our buckaroo knives, close enough to compare directly against the antler horn edition if you want a natural handle instead of stone.

The brass bolster carries a sculpted concave scallop where your index finger sits, giving you a choked-up grip for fine work without a full crossguard getting in the way. See how the pattern sits against the rest of the family in our cowboy knives collection.

How Does the Damascus Pattern Differ From Our Feather and Ladder Blades?

The billet here is folded and drawn to a dense random wave, the traditional pattern and the one most people picture when they hear Damascus. Layers run in loose flowing bands the length of the blade instead of fanning from a centre line the way a feather billet does. Etching brings the contrast up between the two steels so the pattern reads clearly even at arm's length, and no two billets draw out the same.

The pairing is 15N20 and 1095, nickel-bearing steel forge-welded to high carbon and hardened to 58 to 60 HRC. Bright layers against dark, and an edge that holds through rope, hide, and feed sack work. For the full lineage of the pattern, read our handmade cowboy knives guide.

Why a Brass Bolster Instead of a Steel Guard?

Brass has been the Western standard since the frontier era for two reasons that still hold. Weight sits forward of the grip, balancing a short blade so the edge tracks where you point it, and brass takes a patina rather than rusting, so the fitting ages instead of failing.

The bolster on the Prairie Rose is fitted flush to the scales with no gap at the seam, then hand-polished. Expect it to dull to a warm gold over the first season of carry, which is normal and comes back with a soft cloth. Similar fittings run through our bull cutter knives line.

What Is the Pink Turquoise Handle Actually Made Of?

Worth being straight about, because plenty of sellers are not. Turquoise does not occur in pink anywhere in nature. Pink stone scales sold across the knife trade are howlite or magnesite, both soft porous white minerals with natural grey to black veining, dyed and then stabilized with resin for use as handle material. What you get is genuine stone with genuine matrix veining, coloured. Nobody is passing a mined pink turquoise deposit around, and any shop claiming one is selling you a story.

The practical upshot is a handle that behaves like polished stone rather than wood or horn. Cool to the touch, non-porous once stabilized, completely unaffected by blood, water, or humidity, and it will never crack from drying out the way natural stag horn can. The trade-off is hardness. Stone composite chips if you drop the knife onto concrete, where a wood or micarta handle would shrug it off.

Variation you should expect between individual knives

  • Density and direction of the black matrix webbing
  • Depth of pink, from bright fuchsia to a softer rose
  • Placement of veining relative to the pins

Every slab is cut from a different piece of stone, so the knife photographed is the knife shipped. Nothing here is a remake.

How Does the Pancake Sheath Carry?

A pancake is two panels of leather stitched around a welt with belt slots cut through both, so the sheath lies flat against the hip instead of hanging off it. Riding flat means the knife stays out of the way in the saddle and does not swing when you walk. The slot spacing sets the carry angle, and the angle here suits crossdraw wear forward of the hip on your off side, reachable seated. Retention comes from the wet-moulded fit around the bolster rather than a strap, so the draw is clean one-handed.

The face carries hand-stamped basketweave tooling on pink inlay panels, framed by black leather with contrast white saddle stitching. Basketweave is the traditional Western stamp, the same pattern you see on tack and saddle leather, worked over damp vegetable-tanned hide before dyeing. Every panel is stamped by hand, so the weave lines will not align identically across two sheaths.

Which Tasks Suit This Knife?

Ranch and range utility first. Twine and cordage, leather and latigo work, feed sacks, light butchering, camp food prep, and detail cutting where a longer blade would be clumsy. The 4 inch drop point and forward balance also make it a capable small-game and skinning knife, though for whole-carcass work you would be better served by something with more belly from our skinning knives range.

Honest Note on Who Should Buy This One

The Prairie Rose is a dress cowboy knife. Built to work, finished to be looked at. If you want the same 8 inch buckaroo pattern in a natural material that ages with you, the antler horn edition is the one to take. If you want the Western look at a lower price and are happy in rasp steel rather than Damascus, the rasp steel builds run $130 to $137. If you want real Western presence in a blade that still cuts properly, whether for yourself, a rodeo gift, or a collection, the Prairie Rose earns its place.

How Should You Care for the Blade and Handle?

Damascus is high-carbon and reacts to moisture faster than stainless, so the routine matters more than it would on a production knife.

  1. Wipe the blade down after every use, particularly after contact with blood, salt, or acidic food.
  2. Wash by hand with mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth when needed. Never put the knife in a dishwasher.
  3. Dry the blade, bolster, and handle fully and immediately.
  4. Apply a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil or knife oil to the blade before storage.
  5. Store in a dry place away from humidity, and never leave a damp blade inside the sheath.

The stone handle needs no oiling, unlike horn or wood. Keep it away from acetone, bleach, and abrasive cleaners, which can dull the resin or lift the dye, and wipe it with a damp cloth only. A little patina on the steel is normal and even protective. When the edge needs bringing back, follow our knife sharpening guide and keep the stone off the bolster.

Can You Personalize It?

Yes. Custom engraving is available for $20, added at checkout, with your text entered in the engraving instructions field. Names, initials, ranch brands, and dates all work, up to roughly 20 characters etched on the blade flat. For anything beyond text, such as a different handle colour or a matching sheath in alternate tooling, get in touch through our custom knife request form.
